A new staging of While Ye May, choreographed by Hannah Kahn in 1982, will include in its four person cast an appearance by guest artist Gabriel Masson, director of Gabriel Masson Dance and currently a professor in the dance department at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Gabe and Hannah first met in NYC in the early 1980s when he auditioned for the company shortly after arriving in the city to begin his dance career. He danced in the company for several years at that time.  Hannah says of the rehearsal process, "I love the idea of revisiting an artistic relationship with ...

Joe Jensen – exhausted and happy

Posted By On Sunday, February 6th, 2011
This time however all I could think about how was exhausted I felt after rehearsal.  Yet I smiled and realized that it’s worth the toil I put myself through every day I set foot in Hannah’s studio.  At the end of the day, I know I have given it my all.  I am truly proud of my progress since starting with the company in May.  The motivation to grow as I have since then has come from the talent of my fellow company members, Hannah’s challenging movement, and Hannah herself.  She will nit pick the details of her choreography until ...

A perspective on “Knoxville”

Posted By On Wednesday, October 13th, 2010
Hannah Kahn's new work - "Knoxville: Summer of 1915"- is so many things it bears watching many times. It is about Samuel Barber's music in a celebration of the 100th anniversary of his birth. It is about Kahn's luscious ability to use any music, about how she uses this music, as well as about what James Agee - a contemporary of Barber - saw in that music. What Agee saw is sung by Soprano Irene VanHam Friedlob. The Barber score is played live by Mutsumi Moteki as Kahn's dancers embody what Kahn finds ...

Loving the challenge

Posted By On Wednesday, October 13th, 2010
Dance has always remained a constant presence in my life. It challenges me physically and and creatively, and has been a grounding force in my life. I love that Hannah's choreography is demanding- and I love the feeling I have at the end of a performance when I've just accomplished and tackled the choreography! The dance studio has always felt like home to me, a place where I'm able to release energy or whatever I'm feeling into movement. And I love the feeling of being able to look around and see such great energy ...

A note about our premiere: “Knoxville: Summer of 1915″

Posted By On Monday, September 27th, 2010
Knoxville: Summer of 1915 is a 1947 work by Samuel Barber. The text is taken from a 1938 short prose piece by James Agee. It is a lush, richly textured work.  Setting music to excerpts from James Agee’s short story Knoxville, Barber paints an idyllic, nostalgic picture of an evening in the American South, narrated by a child who seems, at times, to transform into an adult. Barber’s musical imagery is very vivid throughout the work, meshing perfectly with the voice which often sings a description of the sounds shortly after they are heard. Musical portrayals of a rocking chair, machinery, ...

A new perspective – Chandler Pace

Posted By On Friday, September 17th, 2010
I sometimes have to pinch myself to bring me back to the reality that I am living out my lifelong dream. As a new member of Hannah Kahn Dance Company, I feel very blessed to be where I am today, and I know all the obstacles that I faced on the journey were well worth it to get here. Although my life has been one big whirlwind of new experiences in the past few months, it always feels like home when I go to dance. I have come to know Hannah as a remarkable woman and am ...

Welcome to the new HKDC website!

Posted By On Wednesday, August 11th, 2010
It has been two years since the last overhaul to the website and I thought it was due for another face lift.  This one was not quite as dramatic as the last but I hope you can all appreciate the upgrade to the functionality and appearance.  I wanted to feature more of our beautiful dancers throughout the site, allow for more photos to be added easily and I wanted to add this feature - the blog.  In the coming weeks we will have new posts written by the dancers themselves...commenting on the current events of the company.  Please feel free ...
